Industrial Action- 30th November 2011
We have been informed by a number of both teaching and non teaching unions, including, NUT, NASUWT, UNISON, etc that they will be taking industrial action in the form of a strike on 30th November 2011.
As parents will be aware, this action is not directed towards the college itself but is part of national industrial action organised by a large number of trade unions in light of proposed changes to the pension schemes of their members.
Whilst there is no requirement on unions to inform us of which members of staff will take action, it has become clear that a large number of both teaching and non teaching staff do intend to strike on 30th November 2011.
It is apparent that because of the number of staff likely to strike it is not possible for the college to provide adequate supervision of its students on the day of the industrial action. Therefore, I find it necessary to inform parents that unless unions decide to withdraw their intention to strike then it will be necessary to close the college to all students on 30th November 2011. Parents will soon receive a letter formally notifying them of the closure. Note, the college will reopen as usual the following day, Thursday 1st December.
Should circumstances change I will inform parents via our website and/or by text message.

What a fantastic year 2011 is proving to be at Sedgefield Community College. In a year that saw the college move into its new £19m state of the art building, its year 11 cohort has recorded the most impressive results ever achieved at the college.
Following on from the recent production of ‘Grease’, the BTEC Performing Arts students of Sedgefield Community College have produced yet another outstanding public performance. Students from both Acting and Dance, along with a selection of Year 9 dancers have been working on aspects of choreography and physical theatre to produce a thought provoking piece based on the play Dr Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. The piece was an interpretation of the Seven Deadly Sins and students were responsible for all aspects of the show, including film, mask making and face painting. The performance was a huge success and the college is rightly extremely proud of all students and staff involved in the process. Looking forward to December, the college has performances of ‘Revolting Rhymes’ and ‘Bugsy Malone’ to look forward to. College staff are grateful to the community for the support it has received to date and encourages attendance at future performances. Tickets for the December performances will be available in November directly from the College.

Sedgefield Community College held its 6th annual prom at Hardwick Hall on Tuesday 5th July. Ominously, heavy rain preceded the event until the arrival of the first of many limousines arrived at which point the skies brightened. As well as huge stretch limos students arrived by a variety of means; party bus, horse and carriage even on the back of a sports motor bike. The girls particularly looked spectacular in their gorgeous Prom dresses and the boys were not to be out done with their vast array of waistcoats and ties. All the students were a credit to themselves and the school. The 100+ guests had a three course dinner and then danced the evening away. The evening was a great success and the College looks forward to seeing the students again in August for results day.

400 youngsters battle for medals in 8 sports in Olympic warm up!
Friday 8th July saw 400 athletes aged 11- 15 years from 7 secondary schools in the Sedgefield School Sport Partnership head to the fantastic new facilities at Sedgefield Community College for their own ‘Olympic’ event.
An inspiring ‘opening ceremony’ with an eye catching dance item, a team march past and Young Ambassadors Linzi Davis and Amy Hardy reading the Olympic Oath on behalf of the athletes and the judges and officials. Finally it was time for Dave Davies, headteacher at Sedgefield Community College, to formally declare the Games Open and the action to begin.
Teams battled it out on the fields playing girls and boys football, rugby 7s and rounders. Inside the competition raged in table tennis, boccia and cheerleading and then everyone came together for the sportshall athletics with an enthusiastic crowd cheering their teams on in a grand finale.
The event was a great success with honours being shared amongst the schools.
The school topping the medals table and winners of the first Sedgefield SSP Olympics was:
Sedgefield Community College.

Diane Snowsill, Manager of Sedgefield School Sport Partnership and organiser was delighted ‘this was a brilliant day giving the youngsters a real flavour of a multi-sport Olympic event and building the excitement as we move towards London 2012 – they all rose to the occasion and competed in the real Olympic Spirit’
