Homework @ SCC
Homework @ SCC plays an important role in ensuring all of our students are able to ACHIEVE. In January 2012, after consultation with students, parents and staff, a new approach to homework has been launched.
Underpinning our approach to homework are four key principles:
Our new approach to homework adheres to each of these principles and reflects the views expressed during the consultation.
In KS3, the homework tasks and linked instructions can be accessed through the Faculty Clouds. Simply click on the appropriate icon to be taken to the Faculty site. Each half-term, new homework tasks will be placed on the Faculty sites ready to access.
Due to the wide variety of courses offered to our students at KS4, it would not be sensible to adopt our new approach in full for these students. However, key KS4 resources and revision materials will be placed on those sites to enable access from home and as necessary, teachers will make students aware of this.
Homework @ SCC – Reading
In addition to the homework tasks set through each Faculty, we also believe that students should read regularly at home. The ability to read for understanding is crucial to students if they are to ACHIEVE success in all subject areas.
For students in KS3, we would expect students to be reading for at least 30 minutes each evening in Y7, rising to approximately one hour by Y9. For students who find reading a particular challenge, this reading should be done alongside a parent, older sibling, etc.
As students enter KS4, they should continue to read and if they have done so throughout KS3, the habit of reading and enjoyment of this process will have been embedded.
We are very fortunate to have a school library with an excellent and up to date stock of fiction and non-fiction texts. Students should make full use of the Library in order to support them in reading at home.
Homework @ SCC – I am Learning
In addition to the homework tasks to be completed each half-term, details of external websites that can be used by parents and students to extend learning further are provided within individual Faculty Clouds. If students wish to undertake additional revision, they can use these websites to enable them to do this.
As a school we have a subscription to the website www.iamlearning.co.uk and students can access this site using the login details below:
I am Learning gives students the opportunity to undertake revision exercises and they are then ‘rewarded’ for the time spent revising through access to a wide range of online games.
